Getting the most out of technology is more important for school districts now than ever before as many across the nation switched to distance learning and online classes as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.

In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf closed schools statewide in April for the rest of the academic year to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

In Plum, school district officials are preparing their teachers for the future.

So far five out of about 240 teachers are Google Educator Level 1 certified with the rest in various stages of training and required testing.

The certification exam focuses on the software G Suite and its different applications and tools.

Superintendent Brendan Hyland said the program “provides students with a dynamic technology environment in which they can become creators, producers, researchers, and thinkers.”

The hope is to have all teachers certified by next school year.

Teachers use Google Classroom as part of the Plum’s Continuity of Education Plan. A digital backpack was created to assist families with educational and technology resources as well as other related information.

Student assignments and materials were also made available at school buildings for parents who don’t have access to the internet.

Other school districts have also used Google tools to help students learn remotely.
