Riverview School District’s junior high cheerleading spirit team took first place in its first competition ever.
The team consists of eight girls and one boy ages 12 to 14 in grades seven and eight.
They competed in the Junior High Game Day Division of “The Battle of the Burgh” competition sponsored by Elite Cheerleading.
The team is led by co-coaches Penny McClelland and Catherine Hornsby.
The event took place Dec. 15 at the Peterson Event Center in Pittsburgh.
“We thought it would be a really good experience,” Hornsby said about entering a competition. “Something other than football and basketball to give them a feeling of what cheerleading can be besides cheering on the sidelines.”
The squad performed a dance, led the crowd in a floor cheer and a touchdown chant.
“I was very proud of the cheerleaders,” Hornsby said. “They put in the time and really went and did it. They worked hard (and) the team was very excited.”
Hornsby said they plan to enter another competition, the Red Hot Event presented by Champion Cheer Central on Feb. 23 at Slippery Rock University.
